Methods for screening candidates can be an overwhelming experience for the interviewer and interviewee. As the interviewer for the company, you probably have seen a lot of applications and resumes with a variety of education and experience. Each candidate interview might seem like a good candidate, with perfect grades and resumes that are very impressive. It is impossible to know rather the person will be a good fit for your company until an actual interview is conducted. Choosing the wrong person could be costly to the company and a waste of time for both the company and the employee. The best way to conduct interviews is to: Screen first by phone Then conduct an in person interview with a set of behavioral questions. This  allows interviewer to discover if the candidate is motivated, a team player and their desire to learn new things. Laws to consider in Austin Texas for the recruitment and selection process: Affirmative Action- Law set to enforce by the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs to band discrimination in the workplace. Child Labor- This law was set in place and enforce by the Wage and Hour Division of the United State Department of Labor. Foreign Labor- This law is set in place when a business wishes to hire a foreign national. After the recruitment and selection process and a candidate is chosen. It is then the responsibility of the supervisor to make sure the employee is aware of their job responsibilities and set goals to achieve during the year to be more of an effective employee to make the company more successful. The performance management and plan discussed below and in plan past recommendations is used during this time. Performance Management Plan A performance management is used as a tool to indicate the employee’s direction and desired direction within the company. This is not the same as a performance appraisal that identifies and discusses job-relevance and performance, strengths and weaknesses. A poll was done to show that 58% of HR executives rated their performance management systems at a C or below average (Cascio, 2013). The one solid payoff for a strong performance management plan is that studies show 51% are more likely to outperform their competitors on a financial standpoint (Cascio, 2013). This tool will be explained and given as a recommendation to Mr. Bradley Stonefield for his Limousine service. Feedback from the employee will be important to Landslide Limousine Service and the employees no matter if the feedback is positive or negative. Employees will have to learn to accept constructive criticism and for Landslide to know how to work with the department and each employee to improve production. A rubric for appraisal will be held by the management team it will require each employee to meet a significant and or attainable requirement. It will be important as a company to demonstrate the standards related to each individual performance. This helps employees to identify what is a failure and what is a success (Cascio, 2013). Management should also be able to give employees a time-frame in order for them to fix the negative parts of their appraisal. Traci’s recommendation would be for  receiving too many negative feedbacks would be to put the employee on probation for 60 days to fix the problem which they received on their appraisal. The employee will have the opportunity to clean up their act to keep their position. This will show the employees are capable of fulfilling the terms and conditions of their terms under the position in which they have been working. Landslide Limousine will offer opportunities for promotions that offer lateral and advancement within the company. Growth with in Landslide will help develop more opportunities to stimulate knowledge and skills in the business. One service that in the future Landslide would like to provide is to offer educational advancement classes that will be available online. In order to take part in these services the employee will have to wait until after their first year and having a good appraisal and not being placed on probation for any reason in order to be considered for a promotion (Cascio, 2013). Employees who are not micromanaged will work better and offer a more flexible schedule for the limousine service. With selecting a schedule; the employee will keep the same schedule for a year. Offering the employees a flexible schedule will also allow more family time for employees. Landslide is big on family and feels that family is very important so employees should not have to miss out on family functions and appointments (Cascio, 2013). Diversity within a company is important. The drivers and administrative staff of Landslide Limousine Services will be diverse, with a diverse group of different ages and race. The appraisal system will also be a diverse group of individuals. The appraisal team’s mission is to help motivate the team of employees to be more valuable to the company. Using the company mission statement and vision will help motivate the team to be successful. Having a diverse group gives the company different experiences from different people and helps provide the drivers with different ideas and each driver can express their experiences and ways of learning in order to improve the team. The more determined the team the better the experiences for our customers and helps the possible longevity of the company. All drivers and staff will be treated as an equal and no one will be heard over someone else. Each driver will be given a job description and with his or hers roles. Each driver will have a background check conducted and diver’s record check by Texas DMV. Ensuring a clear background and driving record will ensure our customers that we are  providing them the best service. A check will be conducted every year to hold the drivers accountable and to ensure our or customers safety at all times. All tickets, accidents, arrest will have to be reported to the administrative office within 5 days of the incident. All arrest for DUIs will call for an automatic termination from the company. All drivers will be put through an intensive training. This training will insure the driver’s capabilities and the driving skills are up to the standards of Landslide Limousines services. The training will help develop stronger individuals and to help them reach their goals and make Landslide Limousine a successful company serving all types of people in the city of Austin, Texas. The organizational performance philosophy is great to have when starting a business. It is important to set the standards for the employees in the beginning. Employees work well when they have a clear understanding of their expectations. The performance management plan gives that clear understanding. Criteria Training evaluation strategies are an important aspect of any company. â€Å"To make an intelligent decision within the HR department and the best way to deploy and manage people, there are two ways that are most essential (1) a description of the strategies that the company would like to use to compete in the marketplace. (2) The design of the job, that includes a description of the work that needs to be done and the skills needed to perform the job and the training and experience requirements required for the number of jobs† (Cascio, 2013, pg. 182). Training should include methods to evaluate: Employee reaction to the training Knowledge and skills gained during the training Application of the knowledge and skills in the workplace The impact of training on the organization. Pretests It is important that Landslide Limousine Company have a written plan for evaluating and training its employees. When there is a clear course objective and content developed, it should not delay until after the training gets completed. â€Å"An evaluation determines the amount of learning achieved by training† (Kirkpatricks Four-Level Training Evaluation Model, 2014). An employee’s performance will improve on the job as a result of training, and the methods of evaluating training are: 1. Gaining  employee’s opinions, questionnaires or informal discussions with employees can help employers determine the importance and suitability of the training program for the employee. 2. Supervisor’s observations allow supervisors to remain in a good position to observe the employee’s performance before and after the training to note the improvements or changes. 3. Improvement in the workplace the ultimate goal in the workplace regards getting constant improvement in the workplace. The training programs helps to make changes throughout the workplace, and it may reduce injury and accident rates. Monitoring and observing training The strategy is very important. It provides the big picture of how you the company intends to evaluate the training across the business. â€Å"The training evaluation strategies help generate coherence to your activities forcing the company to write down and approach the evaluation of the training that helps ensure that the employee and employers have a logical and efficient plan in place† (Kirkpatricks Four-Level Training Evaluation Model, 2014). Collecting feedback An important way for the Landslide Limousine as an employer to determine what the employees has learned during the training events remains during the training, and the training instructor should have specific learning objectives. Evaluations done on the training should get done immediately after the training event to determine if the employee has gained the knowledge, skill, or attitude toward the training. Implementing feedback The behavior of the employee determines if the training changed his or her on-the-job behavior as a result of the training program. If the behavior on the job did not change, it is the responsibility of the supervisors of Landslide Limousine to find out why a change has not occurred from the feedback received. â€Å"The supervisors and training instructor should determine if the training had a positive effect on the job performance† (Kirkpatricks Four-Level Training Evaluation Model, 2014). Landslide Limousine’s management should explain to the employees the importance and applicability of on-the-job training, actual experiences, real world examples, and practicing behaviors to explain the importance to the employees. The final results are determined by the business’ operations, and the results contribute to how good the business functions. How well the training gets done and observed get based off of several things: Improved quality of work Higher productivity Reduction in turnover Fewer grievances Lower absenteeism Fewer accidents Greater job satisfaction Increased profits. In Landslide Limousine the HR department is going to become very important when it comes to recruitment and selection process. It is important to use the tools and information given in the last 6 weeks recommendations for your business to be successful. References Cascio, W. F. (2013). FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE :: Essays Papers

FROM A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE In my 205 I was asked to consider how and why my writing changes from one community to another. This essay represents the results of that exploration. My writing style changes greatly between the communities of academia and newspaper journalism. In both academic and newspaper writing I am compelled to include as much information as possible, yet the two call for completely different styles. I think this difference exists because the two forms of writing have different objectives. The general objectives of a newspaper article are to examine a story or issue, to introduce the public to the issue, and to provide a forum for others' opinions. With a few exceptions, newspapers don't have the time or the space to delve into an issue; instead they introduce it and possibly follow it up later with another story. The general objective of most academic writings I have done is to comprehensively answer a question. This involves a far more exhaustive exploration of an issue. Often in academic writing, the question itself provides the objective and defines the content of the writing. The fundamental differences in purpose between newspaper and academic forms of writing manifest into more clearly defined differences. The most obvious difference between the two forms of writing is structure. By using the term "structure," I am referring to the length and context of the piece of writing. Structure is an important factor because it sets the ground work for my writing. In academic writing, I try to cite numerous examples or personal experiences to illustrate a point. Newspaper writing requires that I condense my points. The writing is supposed to be simple, yet informative, and is crammed into a few inches of type. Writing to fill six inches of type is quite different than filling six double-spaced pages. Structure also translates into differences in word usage. Because of space constrictions, every word counts when writing for a newspaper. The key is to say as much as possible in the fewest words possible. There is a specific "newspaper style" which calls for short paragraphs, constant attribution of information, active voice, and numerous other writing guidelines. According to newspaper style, paragraphs should be one or two sentences long, with each paragraph including a complete statement or thought. This allows the reader to move from point-to-point quickly, without becoming bored and losing interest in the story. Information in newspaper articles must always be attributed.

What types of problems and effects are been forced upon the planet?

What types of problems and effects are been forced upon the planet with modern technology and the increasing population and what can be done to make the planet healthier? The growing population, deforestation and use of fossil fuels are causing the biggest environmental problem that has been discovered over the past 50 years, Global Warming. In the past 10 years dramatic actions have been taken to curb the dangerous affects that could lead to drought, floods, sweltering heat and rising seas. I believe that to curb the effects more people should be aware of what the future would be like for future generations. How their lives would be affected by global warming. Simple things like walking to work and school or using a bike to commute would make a huge difference, if more people knew that bicycling is 117% more efficient than walking, and then I believe more people would do it. However the majority will have to take this into account if they want to make a difference. By simply wearing an extra shirt around the house and not turning on the heating will contribute to saving the environment. Paper which is made from trees should not be wasted and recycled when finished with. In order to prevent unnecessary usage of the planets resources' recycling helps to curb the effects of deforestation. Whenever a person uses a car or forgets to switch their television off at the mains, leaving the little red light to waste energy, a thought should be spared for the millions of men women and children that survive every day in third world countries who have quite possibly never seen a television. If every commuter car in the U.S. transported an extra person, it would save eight billion gallons of fuel a year. Facts like these assist in convincing people that small gestures matter. However many people do not think that just one person can make the difference. Scientists have discovered the main causes of global warming and because of this curbing the effects causing global warming is a great deal easier. Emissions of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases from human activities including industrial processes, fossil fuel combustion, and changes in land use, such as deforestation all contribute to the increasing temperature of the planet. Heat from the sun passes through the atmosphere of the earth and heats up the earth's surface. The heat is reflected back out to space by the earth's surface but certain gases in the atmosphere trap some of the deflected heat. These gases then act as a blanket, keeping heat locked in the atmosphere warming the planet. This process is similar to that which takes place in a greenhouse environment hence the name â€Å"greenhouse effect† and â€Å"greenhouse gases†. Greenhouse gas (es) is the name given to the gases which trap the heat in the earth's atmosphere. Carbon Dioxide is the greatest contributor to the build up of gases in the atmosphere. Cars, Factories, even using paper all contribute to the hostile planet we are all creating for future generations. Fossil fuels release the majority of harmful gases into the atmosphere, so in order to reduce the amount of dangerous gas entering the atmosphere; other sources of energy are being used. Renewable energy sources such as Solar Power, Wind turbines/farms, Tidal, Hydro-electric, Geothermal and using Biomass and alternative power sources such as nuclear power all contribute to the decrease in use of fossil fuels. Trees provide oxygen for the planet by removing the carbon from carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen back in to the atmosphere. This done by a process called photosynthesis. Transpiration is a process whereby the plants carry water up the stems of the plants into the leaves and it evaporates through the leaves. These processes determine the weather and cause clouds, which block the suns heat from passing through the ozone layer. Deforestation regularly occurs because of farmers attempting to settle farmland; the poor become ‘shifted cultivators' and resort to using ‘Slash and Burn' methods to make an open space. The name implies exactly what happens; trees are cut down and the remains are burned. The ash is used as a fertilizer and the land is used for vegetation farming or a cattle farming, however, the soil that is cleared in slash and burn is left infertile; the nutrients in the soil are quickly absorbed by surrounding organisms. The trees can no longer be replanted in the same area once a shifted cultivator is finished in that area. Another reason for major deforestation is because of many labourers resorting to illegally cutting down trees to survive. The UN has however developed a plan to provide the poorer countries with enough money to stop the deforestation. Acts like these will all help to minimise the dangerous effects inflicted on the planet. Tidal barriers attract a lot of controversy. The proposal to build the Severn Barrier has been severely opposed by many environmentalists, because of impacts upon wildlife and the marine environment. The construction of tidal lagoons has been proposed as a more ecologically sound method of generating electricity from tides. However due to global warming, it is inevitable that the sea levels will rise. Coastal cities must be protected against sea level rise, so tidal barriers must be constructed for this purpose. If CO2 emissions are not dramatically reduced within twenty years we will face much greater sea level rise, and we will then have to look at tidal barriers to protect other UK cities, on the River Severn. Although Biomass is a renewable energy source it does release greenhouse gases into the atmosphere reducing the use of fossil fuels but not necessarily reducing the emissions of harmful gases into the atmosphere. Nuclear power is not renewable but it does not emit any harmful greenhouse gases and therefore it does not contributing to the greenhouse effect. At present, there are 442 nuclear power stations in operation in the world, with a generation capacity of 368 million kilowatts, which accounts for 16% of world's total power generation for 18 consecutive years. Nuclear power has many advantages; it is cheap and produces large amounts of energy from small amount of fuel, it is also very reliable and produces very little waste. Although there is little waste produced, it is dangerous and has to be buried underground to contain the radioactivity; it takes hundreds of years before the radioactivity is gone. On April 25th -26th, 1986 the planet suffered worst nuclear power accident occurred at Chernobyl in the former Soviet Union (now Ukraine). The Chernobyl nuclear power plant had 4 reactors and whilst testing reactor number 4 numerous safety procedures were disregarded. A chain reaction in the reactor became out of control creating explosions and a fireball which blew off the reactor's heavy steel and concrete lid. The Chernobyl accident killed more than 30 people immediately, and as a result of the high radiation levels in the surrounding 20-mile radius, 135,000 people had to be evacuated. It will take four hundred years before the affected area will become liveable again. In conclusion, I have discussed the effects of pollution and the controversy caused, I have also discussed what can be done to curb the effects. The use of renewable energy can assist in the prevention of further damage, and that walking or bicycling instead of driving can also reduce the damaging effects facing the environment. I have discussed the disaster and consequences of nuclear power and its advantages to the environment. I would like to conclude by saying that unless drastic measures are taken to ensure the safety and wellbeing of future generations, the planet will die and we, as a species, will too.

Political Leaders During The War - 1087 Words

Political leaders were also put to the test during the war. Many African Americans worked closely with the government to both rally black support for the war and to help battle against issues such as lynching and segregation. For example, Emmett Scott, the former secretary to to Booker T. Washington at the Tuskegee Institute, was able to organize a conference for black newspaper editors and political leaders in Washington, D.C. in June 1918. This conference yielded positive results. The attendees declared their loyalty to the government. Although World War I affect people of all demographics, those who were impacted the most directly were African Americans who were called to fight and labor overseas. Over 200,000 African Americans went†¦show more content†¦The 93rd Division’s 369th Infantry Regiment from New York were nicknamed the â€Å"Harlem Hellfighters† for their exemplary war efforts. Two of the soliders, Henry Johnson and Needham Roberts, were the first ever American soldiers to receive the French War Cross. This regiment would serve for 191 days and gave up no ground to German forces. The 92rd division had much more stressful experiences than the 93rd. They faced more racial discrimination. The white army officials in the 92nd division would characterize the black soldiers as rapists, and would spread rumors to French civilians. African Americans were often viewed as threats to white authority, and many were forced to be transferred out of the division for racial reasons. Others were also court-martialed on lies told by white officials. The 92nd division fought well as a whole, despite having inadequate training and having to deal with racial discrimination. One regiment, the 368th Infantry Regiment however performed poorly in the Allied Meuse-Argonne offensive in September 1918 and as a result, racist military members used this case as a way to characterize all black soldiers. They would classify them as incompetent and failures. Postwar, African American soldiers would protest these allegations. Even with all of the discrimination and setbacks, the service that the African Americans completed in France was a very good experience for them, many troops would often
